Some fundamental issues in internal wave modeling
Tipo de evento: Seminário LNCC
Large amplitude internal solitary waves excited typically by the interaction of tidal currents with bottom topography have been observed frequently in coastal oceans through in-situ measurements and satellite images. The simplest physical setup supporting internal wave motion is that of a two-layer incompressible Euler fluid in a channel. Weakly nonlinear models have been extensively used to study internal waves and, among them, the (uni-directional) KdV model has stood for many years as the "canonical" equation for the evolution of these waves. However, since their amplitudes are often comparable to the thickness of the well-mixed upper layer, the validity of weakly nonlinear models is expected to be rather limited. In this talk, we will go beyond the weakly nonlinear regime and single out the main difficulties arising in the mathematical modeling of internal waves. Properties of recently proposed higher-order nonlinear models will be presented.
